As anticipated, Two Tree was relatively tough stuf As anticipated, Two Tree was relatively tough stuff last night – but it was worth the effort to get SUP Club back out at the coast for the first time this season. After over an hour working out against the easterly breeze and flooding tide, we flew back in closer to 20 minutes! Big thanks and well done all…

Great work from five of Team SUPsect on the Norfol Great work from five of Team SUPsect on the Norfolk Broads last weekend, finishing the 27km Paddle Skedaddle with three podiums… Our Al’s clearly still in fine form as he claimed 3rd in the 14' men's hardboard fleet after just over 3 hours (3:06:15), with PQ top half of a tough fleet in a very respectable 3:23:52. Michelle convincingly won the 14' women’s inflatable title in 3:45:31 (beating all but one man of 33 inflatables altogether!) Sara was back on top too, comfortably winning the 12'6" women’s hardboard class in 3:51:53 (also only outpaced by one man of 14 paddlers altogether on 12'6"s). Similarly impressive in his first full-on race, Rich finished well up in the top half of the 14' men’s inflatable fleet in 4:05:22. Our monthly SUPsect Water Wombles litter-pick reve Our monthly SUPsect Water Wombles litter-pick reverted to on-foot yesterday (due to unseasonably high flow on the river and awkward tides at the coast) but we made the most of a breezy, grey Saturday to again clear the southern bank of the tidal River Crouch from Hullbridge up towards Battlesbridge. Plus we were able to stop halfway for a suitably cakey celebration of 'Bucket Womble' Helen's birthday... Thanks everyone for helping out – and stay tuned to www.supsect.com/paddleboard-litter-picks for more details of next month's pick, when we plan to be back on our boards in central Chelmsford as part of @loveyourchelmsford's river-clean early on Saturday 3rd June.

The weather gods smiled on us for SUP Club last ni The weather gods smiled on us for SUP Club last night (of course we were checking their mood on the radar and lightning tracker apps, and ready to abandon if necessary!) Confident the storms were safely passing us by, somehow the sun shone through and we weren’t even rained on as we watched the dark clouds and occasional light show on the southern horizon. And even in such a solid flow we still made an 8k loop from Mill House upstream to Cuton Lock and back in time for dinner and drinks in our favourite local before the rains came. Another super-fun, super-friendly SUP Club meet – thanks again all…

Can’t believe it’s been a week since we were d Can’t believe it’s been a week since we were down in Devon for the 2023 Head of the Dart – another amazing weekend…

Seventeen of us raced the full 13km from Dartmouth to Totnes on the Saturday: star performer was Al who saw off some quality competition to win the men’s 12'6" fleet, with Ray in 8th, while Sara claimed a strong second in the women’s 12'6" ahead of Ali in 9th. Our Dragon crew weren’t able to retain the shield from last year against a crazy-fast Bray Lake squad, but cruised home for another podium spot in second place. Meanwhile PQ took 22nd in the prestigious 14' men’s class while Welly and his new tandem partner Carrie were second duo. In the leisure fleet, Rich finished an amazing 5th overall, while similarly impressive on shorter 12'6"s were Austin in 11th and Matt 15th, Glenn came 35th, Helen 47th and Greg 50th (of 110 in their fleet).

But truth be told, the racing was really just a good excuse to get back to Bigbury Bay where a dozen of us (including wave-hungry El and Meg!) scored some super-fun surf for a couple of days afterwards. Magic – thanks again Devonshire…

Huge appreciation too for all at SUP Event Management, @waterborn_sup, @redpaddleco, @starboardsupuk and @salcombegin who made another classic @hotd_sup_challenge possible. Full results via https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bTnd8OO4rEWi2yPn8yWbEWSUUeBnUv4k

We enjoyed a relatively busy early season SUP Club We enjoyed a relatively busy early season SUP Club last night from Mill House, given the breeze and chill in the air. Undeterred, 30-odd of us went upwind-downwind via Papermill to (or towards) Rushes Lock and back before 20 of us headed out for dinner and drinks. So good to see a few more of our favourite paddlers emerging from hibernation!

We’re on our way down to Devonshire for the fant We’re on our way down to Devonshire for the fantastic Head of the Dart SUP Challenge tomorrow – where we’ve got some silverware to defend! 🏆 Our four-man Dragon crew are ready for a tough race to retain our hard-won Red Paddle Co shield from last year. 🐉 Plus a dozen more SUPsect paddlers will be taking on the c.13km course from Dartmouth up to Totnes across the race and challenger fleets, including 2022 12'6" men's winner, Al. 😎 We always have an amazing time in the South Hams and can’t wait for this year; hopefully a nice warm-up group paddle on the Kingsbridge Estuary later today, then once the racing’s done dare we say that the forecasts are shaping up nicely for some fun-size south coast surf on Sunday and Monday?!? 🌊🏄‍♀️🏄

We struck lucky with a perfect break in the weathe We struck lucky with a perfect break in the weather on Saturday to host our rescheduled fourth round of the EASI winter race series up at Hullbridge. With enormous thanks to the dozen amazing SUPsect volunteers alongside a few of Suffolk SUP’s finest who ensured the event ran so smoothly – plus the 36 racers and many supporters who came to cheer them on, of course. With a really great vibe it felt just like the pre-pandemic ‘good old days’! Three fleets raced either 5km (novice) or just under 8k (racer and experienced) into Battlesbridge and back on the tidal River Crouch.

We’re very proud indeed of our ‘home team’ of SUPsect racers: Al finished an awesomely strong 2nd in the experienced men’s 14' fleet, Step-Back Stu and PQ just a second apart in 5th and 6th. Sara was first experienced 12'6" woman in a similarly impressive time. Meanwhile Michelle powered her 14' to first place in the women’s racer fleet and Ray took second 12’6" racer. And we had a very strong showing in the novice fleet: Dan took 3rd (and 2nd overall for the series in his first season of racing), while in their first ever races Austin finished a super-fine 4th, Gareth 7th, Owen 9th and Neil 10th.

Full results via www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=312211 and many more images on the EASI group, thanks to Graham, Helen and The Glenngineer!

Having not had any joy getting Wednesday evening S Having not had any joy getting Wednesday evening SUP Club season going thus far this year, it was great to get an impromptu Sunday service together when the weather finally allowed. 😀 Over 20 of us hit Battlesbrige from Hullbridge yesterday morning… 🪞 As for SUP Club this week – of course it’s looking windy again (!) but at least it's not raining and we really are very keen to get the season started at long last so are hoping to hit Mill House for a relatively ‘hardcore’ dash in the flow and wind. 💨💦 As will be the way this season, keep up to date with our latest plans via www.supsect.com/sup-club – totally tbc Wednesday morning in the event at www.supsect.com/event/sup-club-19th-april-2023-tbc

After last night’s rain, river levels and flow w After last night’s rain, river levels and flow were back up again on the Chelmer today. 💦🦢🦆 But they stayed within safe limits and we’ve been determined to get back on our boards for this month’s Water Wombles litterpick, so having scouted our stretch between Paper Mill and Little Baddow Mill, we kept today’s pick between the two locks. 🔒⛏🔓 A dozen of us collected a good bagful of rubbish each – mainly bottles, cans and plastics, plus some randomness that had been swept downriver by recent flooding. 🧃🥤🍾🥫🛒 Turned out to be a beautiful day on the river; happily, we finished before the rains returned mid-afternoon! 🌦 More via the SUPsect Water Wombles FB group – and now on our website too: www.supsect.com/paddleboard-litter-picks
