Blazing February in #sunniertimes With one of the Blazing February in #sunniertimes

With one of the best forecasts we’ve seen all winter for paddling, although many of us are still choosing to stay at home and off the water for now, it’s a super-tempting weekend to get out. ☀️ So fair play to anyone who claims a secluded SUP session from their local launch as daily exercise.

We often get a reassuring reminder that winter’s finally loosened its grip at this time of year, even if lockdown hasn’t quite yet! 🔒 This shot’s from late February 2019 when a few of us grabbed a springlike sunset paddle to Canvey Way from Two Tree – www.supsect.com/canvey-way-12k

What are you looking forward to getting back to in What are you looking forward to getting back to in #sunniertimes?

It’s come as a bit of a surprise to realise quite how much we’ve missed our burgeoning litter-picks…

Frustratingly, we weren’t able to organise so many clean-ups last year – we got a few big ones done on the Crouch and Two Tree Island, collecting well over 100 sacks of rubbish last winter, but since then restrictions and crowding only allowed one group pick over a windy August bank holiday on the River Chelmer. 💨 We were pleased with our work on a blustery day from Papermill Lock though, collecting everything we could see from the water right up to Cuton Lock and back.

We’re super-keen to get our litter-picks going again in spring – if you’re up for it too, please do come and lend your support via www.facebook.com/groups/supsectwombles in association with @brownandcarroll and @bigblueoceancleanup

It’s been a difficult winter for sure, yet spring’s in the air at last and not too far down the ‘road’ we can all see ourselves regularly back on the water again… 😎 When restrictions start to ease at the end of next month, do be ready: it’s likely to feel crazy busy out there! 🥳 So choose your spot wisely, time it right and SUP is an ideal way to find some space.

We’re really looking forward to being able to run another SUP Club downwinder this year… 🏄🏄‍♀️ Last time was early October 2019, as we couldn’t organise one within our C-19 protocol in 2020. 🤞 Everything's looking much more hopeful for 2021 though!

Here we are beyond Southend Pier on our way from Chalkwell down to Shoebury, aided by a north-westerly breeze and a dropping tide. 😎 Find this and many more of our favourite routes at www.supsect.com

Who remembers that night?

Nice to see such warm weather on the forecasts for Nice to see such warm weather on the forecasts for this weekend – but don’t be fooled… 🤓 It’s still looking very breezy and, even if you’re lucky enough to be tucked out of a southerly at your local spot, that water’s still about as cold as it gets right now. 🧊 So do dress appropriately for immersion (no matter how unlikely you think that’s going to be) as at 5°C in the estuary, the water’s quite literally shockingly cold! 🥶

This was a really good day. 😎 Yet we had to wait until July last year, after Lockdown 1.0 was sufficiently eased, before we could gather all four of our BSUPA instructors to safely run a pair of (suitably separated!) coastal sessions...

We’re so looking forward to getting together again when restrictions allow this summer. 🤞 Here’s Dunc, El, Trev, and Ë packed up after a memorable afternoon teaching SUP – more at www.supsect.com/about-us

Total tranquility in #sunniertimes It’s not alw Total tranquility in #sunniertimes

It’s not always easy to find space amongst the 1.5-million inhabitants of Essex. 🚴‍♀️🏘👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🏃‍ And at times last summer, when we were all encouraged outdoors, the population density did feel pretty palpable!

But if you know your locations (www.supsect.com/spots) 🗺 understand the forecasts (www.supsect.com/sup-weather) 🌤 and time it just right ⏰ there’s still plenty of paddling peace to be found out on the water…

Thanks to Eve for this shot of Sara way out down the Ray off Southend in absolutely perfect low tide conditions last summer.

It’s a view many of us are familiar with – looking east down the Ray towards town, with Southend Pier shrouded in early morning haze. 🌅 Thanks to Sam and his drone, here’s what it looks like from a fair bit higher up!

Must confess though, we don’t know the paddlers heading back to Two Tree in this shot – do you?

Taking to the river in #sunniertimes What between Taking to the river in #sunniertimes

What between flooding (presumably freezing this week) and ‘stay local’ restrictions, this winter will be the longest we’ve ever stayed off the River Chelmer in a decade's paddleboarding there. 🏄🏄‍♀️ So we’re really looking forward to getting back on it this summer.

Thanks to Andy for this gloriously verdant shot taken as the sun broke through on a race training session last season. ⛅️ Hoping that come springtime we'll be good to start our ninth season of lessons, SUP Club and more recently Race Club too from our resident spot on the river at Paper Mill Lock... www.supsect.com/paper-mill-lock

Another classic SUP Club sunset; this one’s from back in high summer 2018 at the end of a perfect down-tider from Chalkwell to Thorpe Bay / Shoebury. 😎 It’s a great one-way route in a north-westerly breeze, departing as the water glasses off a couple of hours in to an ebbing tide: see www.supsect.com/chalkwell-7k-downwinder

We plan our Wednesday evenings very carefully, choosing the best venues and routes to suit the weather and conditions – always aiming to keep things interesting for our most experienced, while still totally accessible for our newest paddlers too...

With all four of our BSUPA qualified instructors on the water we ensure that no-one gets left behind, looping the frontrunners around to keep the group broadly together, so routes are covered safely and in good company. 🤙 All we really ask of newbies is that they can stand up and paddle confidently and competently for 90 minutes. 🏄‍♀️🏄 It’s completely free to come join us every Wednesday in summertime via www.supsect.com/sup-club

Thanks to Trev, and Russell Parker for this shot from the Ness Road slipway.

It was a year ago today – ironically, in unseasonably warm weather – that we ran our Hullbridge race for round two of the East Anglian SUP Initiative winter series. ❄️ Little did we realise at the time that this would be one of just a precious few races that were able to go ahead in 2020…

Here’s the ‘Experienced’ startline heading off to Battlesbridge for their full-on 7.5km loop. 💫 A 10-strong ‘Racer’ fleet also took on the same route, plus a further 12 the shorter ‘Novice’ course. ⭐️ We were pleased to attract 29 racers in mid-winter and the day went perfectly, despite a fair old breeze. 💨 Big thanks to the awesome volunteers who helped it happen so smoothly and safely.

It’s been a while now – so who’s looking forward to getting back onto a startline in 2021?

A taste of things to come in #sunniertimes Ahead A taste of things to come in #sunniertimes

Ahead of this weekend’s snow, we caught a tantalising glimpse of spring yesterday. 🌞 Clear skies, relative warmth and virtually no wind naturally tempted a few local paddlers out to score a session as their form of daily exercise. 🤸‍♀️ Here’s Helen and Glen somewhere approaching perfection near the Leigh Buoy at low tide – taken by a passing Andy; entirely independently and from an appropriate distance!

We’ve still got a little way to go yet, with chillier weather returning as we endure these last few weeks of lockdown – but with ever-more positive news by the day now, it does feel like we’ve turned the corner towards a much sunnier spring. 😎 Keep the faith and we’ll see you all back out there soon...

Daybreak at the Shoeburyness Boom in #sunniertimes Daybreak at the Shoeburyness Boom in #sunniertimes

Thanks to journeyman Robert ‘Piña’ for this stunning shot of sunrise through the piles at Shoebury. Originally built of wood during the Second World War to prevent submarine incursions into the Thames Estuary, the concrete boom we know today is actually a replacement Cold War structure from the early 1950s.

It’s a really tidal area, so you don’t want to be anywhere near the boom on an ebb tide. You certainly can’t risk getting swept through it, as MoD Shoeburyness operate a live military firing range onto Pig’s Bay north of here! More at www.supsect.com/shoebury-east-beach

Endurance racing in #sunniertimes Back in Septemb Endurance racing in #sunniertimes

Back in September 2018, our Duncan realised a 5-year ambition when he took on the iconic SUP 11-City Tour: racing 220km around Friesland in northern Holland. 🇳🇱 He didn’t just finish, but powered his Red Paddle Elite 14' to a top-10 place in a fierce global masters fleet for the event’s 10th anniversary; comfortably the fastest iSUP overall in a combined time of 25 hours over the five day stages (and arguably fastest Brit too!) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It was both the most gruelling & challenging but also most rewarding & weirdly enjoyable thing he’s ever done in sport – supported from home by SUPsect paddlers following #117 on the live tracker… 🙌 Each evening Dunc wrote a blog, which you can still read via www.supsect.com/category/2018_11city

The following year, back on the UK circuit in 2019 Dunc won the Thames Ultra (45km) outright and finished first in class at the Norfolk Ultra (70km) and Great Glen Challenge (92km) to secure a UK SUP National Champion title. 🏆 Plus he won the 12’6” fleet at the Head of the Dart, Battle of the Thames and Paddle in the Park to become GB SUP 12’6” Distance Champion too. 🥇 All thanks to El’s long-term coaching. 📢 More at www.supsect.com/1-to-1-coaching

After seven years on the racing scene, Dunc’s taking a little break from competition (which wasn’t hard to do in 2020!) but look out for more of our race coaching clients on the national circuit in 2021: Danny, Al, Andy, Pete and Nick are definitely ones to watch. 👀 Plus Team SUPsect have an awesome 2nd place at the National SUP Club Championships to defend in September. 🍾 To which end, we’re really looking forward to getting back to our free Race Club as soon as we’re able to: see www.supsect.com/race-club

Synchronicity in #sunniertimes Don't you just lov Synchronicity in #sunniertimes

Don't you just love when it all comes together? The tide turns, the wind drops and the water starts to glass up as a golden sun sinks towards the horizon… 🌤 With enough experience and local knowledge, actually it’s not too hard to work out when magic conditions can occur. 🌅

Much more coincidentally though, Ed – who took this pic – first met his neighbour Rupert here at SUP Club a few years ago. 🤝 At the pub afterwards they soon realised they lived just a few doors apart. 🍻 They’ve been paddle buddies ever since; which has come in particularly handy at times when we've only been permitted to pair up… 🏄🏄 (Although has to be said, Ed does get out there a fair bit – and as a super-regular super-friendly SUP Clubber, he’s not short of willing compadres!)

So, do you have any serendipitous SUP stories to share?

River Chelmer SUP Clubs in #sunniertimes back in 2 River Chelmer SUP Clubs in #sunniertimes back in 2018. ☀️ Question is, who remembers what happened five minutes later, as we were preparing to launch at Paper Mill Lock? 🦢

It’s weird how this shot from August 2018 looks a little incongruous now – gathering ashore like this was something we were so careful not to do throughout 2020; even when we could run SUP Clubs under our C-19 protocol, it was all about staggered arrivals and individual launching. 😷 But this is how our Wednesday evenings used to look in ‘before times’ … and with ever-more positive vaccine news, we’re increasingly hopeful that high summer 2021 could look similar again? 😎

Our new friends at @paper_mill_lock were incredible hosts last year. ⭐️ We’re really looking forward to taking SUP Club and Race Club, as well as our lessons of course, back there this coming season – which will be our 10th up on the River Chelmer! 🥳
When was the last time you paddled abroad? 🌍 I When was the last time you paddled abroad? 🌍

It was back in October 2019 for El and Dunc – an awesome long weekend, on forecast, to Spain’s rugged Atlantic north coast. ⛰ This 5km beach in Cantabria will make a great SUP Club trip: sheltered fun-sized waves at one end, heavier surf nearer town, plus a vast flat-water estuary to explore at high tide … y muchos tapas y cervezas! 🥘 🍺

Stepping back into #sunniertimes Of course, wint Stepping back into #sunniertimes

Of course, winter sunshine’s brilliant too! 🤙 Although many of us aren’t hitting the water right now as we stay at home and keep it local during lockdown, paddling is a legitimate form of exercise for some – and hopefully we can all get back out there before too long...

Dress appropriately, read the weather right, know your limits, and for experienced paddlers the colder months can still provide perfect conditions. ❄️ Here’s one of our most talented paddlers, Ian – SUPsect instructor ‘Coach Ë’ – styling out another text-book step-back turn at the end of last year.

It’s amazing how a humble paddleboarding photo can turn out pretty arty 😍 Here’s a magic moment from Wellyboot Steve, on his home waters of the Crouch Estuary.

Exploring in #sunniertimes Last year certainly w Exploring in #sunniertimes

Last year certainly wasn't a classic for travel, with ’stay local’ such a familiar phrase, but there was a month or two of summer when getting out and about was positively encouraged.

Here’s a great pic of Jo navigating some classic canal architecture, way out of county...

Blazing February in #sunniertimesWith one of the best forecasts we’ve seen all winter for paddling, although many of us are still choosing to stay at home and off the water for now, it’s a super-tempting weekend to get out. ☀️ So fair play to anyone who claims a secluded SUP session from their local launch as daily exercise. We often get a reassuring reminder that winter’s finally loosened its grip at this time of year, even if lockdown hasn’t quite yet! 🔒 This shot’s from late February 2019 when a few of us grabbed a springlike sunset paddle to Canvey Way from Two Tree – www.supsect.com/canvey-way-12k ... What are you looking forward to getting back to in #sunniertimes? It’s come as a bit of a surprise to realise quite how much we’ve missed our burgeoning litter-picks…Frustratingly, we weren’t able to organise so many clean-ups last year – we got a few big ones done on the Crouch and Two Tree Island, collecting well over 100 sacks of rubbish last winter, but since then restrictions and crowding only allowed one group pick over a windy August bank holiday on the River Chelmer. 💨 We were pleased with our work on a blustery day from Papermill Lock though, collecting everything we could see from the water right up to Cuton Lock and back. We’re super-keen to get our litter-picks going again in spring – if you’re up for it too, please do come and lend your support via SUPsect Water Wombles in association with Brown & Carroll London and Big Blue Ocean Cleanup ...
