We’ve been paddling around Two Tree Island for well over a decade now, but yesterday was the first time we’ve scrambled down the banks to litter-pick the north shore. 🌳🌳🧹🚮♻️ We’re very grateful to the dirty dozen who devoted a chilly Sunday afternoon to collecting rubbish from the foreshore. 🙏 No surprise there was plenty to find – including we think our biggest collection of wheels and tyres yet? 🛞 More on our monthly litter-picks (hopefully the weather will allow us comfortably back onto our boards for April's) via the SUPsect Water Wombles FB group.

We’ve seen plenty of beautiful sunrise and sunset shots from our paddlers over winter, but there’s something a bit special about this one… 😍 Thanks to Michelle who selflessly interrupted her dawn patrol training paddle on the River Chelmer to capture daybreak doing its thing.

Huge thanks to everyone – 22 in all, we think? – who devoted their Sunday to clearing the south bank of the River Crouch in Battlesbridge yesterday. Not too much had built up since we last picked it, this time last year, so we were able to dig a bit deeper and go a little further this time. Over 40 bags of rubbish in all. Amongst the standard cans, bottles and various familiar plastics, this month’s weirdness awards go to a set of false teeth and a (hopefully unrelated!) DeWalt drillset… More every month via the SUPsect Water Wombles FB group.

We're looking forward to hosting round #4 of the EASI winter race series from Hullbridge, a fortnight today on Sunday 19th February. If you're race fit and have been getting out regularly over winter, entries are still open via www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=294732

• Novice (up to 12'6"): 5km
• Racer (12'6" & 14'): 7.5km
• Experienced racer (12'6" & 14' – has made podium at national level): 7.5km
• Prone: 7.5km

c.9.30am registration ahead of 11.30am race starts, full details and confirmation on forecast in the week approaching... Of course, no pressure to race – please feel free to come along and support from the shore though!

Glorious winter sunshine and light winds delivered

Glorious winter sunshine and light winds delivered perfect conditions for the third round of our collaborative EASI winter race series yesterday, superbly hosted by Suffolk SUP on the beautiful tidal River Orwell. ☀️ And again, all five SUPsect paddlers made podium… 🥇🥇🥈🥉🥉 Michelle was by some margin the fastest 12'6" woman (and in amongst the 14' experienced women's times), Pete won the men's 14' racer fleet by inches, Ray took second in the men’s 12'6" racer, Dan a strong 3rd in a crazy-fast novice fleet, while Al also powered to 3rd in a big 14' experienced fleet. 🖤🧡 Full results at www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=302919 and loads more pix on the EASI FB group. 📆 So next month it’s our turn to host, on Sunday 19th February (weather allowing, of course!) up at Hullbridge on the River Crouch just as we did back in 2019 and 2020: entries via www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=294732

It was way too windy to paddle over the weekend, so this month’s SUPsect Water Wombles litter-pick was on foot… 💨🧹🌤 After nearly a year since we last hit the banks of the River Crouch from Hullbridge, there was certainly enough to tidy up yesterday – but encouragingly, year-on-year the cumulative effect of these picks and the bigger turn-outs we’re getting mean they’re feeling a little easier each time. 🙏😎 In the end we collected 25 bagfuls of rubbish from 2.5km of estuary bank – cans and bottles right down to lighters and innumerable old cotton buds and other tiny plastics. 🥤🍾🥫 Not too much weirdness either; the biggest surprise was a somehow intact 1.5m fluorescent tube! 💡

Huge thanks to Stu & Gemma for inviting us all around to their place in Battlesbridge afterwards for a champion chilli and drinks. 🍲🍻🥂🖤🧡 Very much appreciated.

Fantastic results from Saturday’s EASI winter ra

Fantastic results from Saturday’s EASI winter race #2 up at Stowbridge on the River Great Ouse in Norfolk, hosted by Barefoot SUP, where all six SUPsect racers took podium places. Headliner has to be Dan, who powered to victory in a big novice fleet at his first race. Michelle also claimed first in a somewhat smaller (!) 12'6" women’s racer fleet. Pete finished 2nd in the 14' racer class, as did Al in the 14' experienced fleet, while Ray also claimed 2nd spot in the 12'6" men’s racer fleet. Meanwhile first time out on her new 14' raceboard, Sara finished 3rd in the women’s experienced fleet. We’re often asked what we 'do' over winter, after SUP school and SUP Club seasons have closed. The answer’s usually more than people expect. On top of racing and litter-picking, freepaddling conditions can be magic – it’s all about watching the forecasts and choosing your moment. And sometimes we’re able to score moments like these. Proper winter groundswell occasionally coincides with suitable weather to light up our nearest SUPsurfing spots, just a few counties away. Yesterday morning's mist gave way to a gloriously sunny afternoon for this month’s litter-pick as our Water Wombles took on the stretch upstream from Sandford Mill to Chelmsford on the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation. 🧹🚮♻️ Great to see it’s remained much clearer than the previous times we’ve visited, but we still got a good dozen bagfuls of bottles, cans and other 'standard' detritus out… 🍾🥤🥫🍃🦢 Huge thanks to everyone that joined us on an amazing autumn day. 🌞 Stay tuned to the SUPsect Water Wombles FB group for details of next month's river-clean, provisionally Sunday 11th December.

Happy Halloween! 🎃🖤🧡 SUPsect fright night paddlers made an amazing effort with facepaint, masks, costumes, props and lights this year for our 5th annual spooky SUP parade through Chelmsford city centre on Saturday. ☠️💀🧟🧛‍♂️👻👺🧙‍♀️👿🦇 A flotilla of skeletons, plus day of the dead brides and grooms, the grim reaper, a werewolf, a mummified paddler, ghost pirate, witches, vampires and plenty more ghoulishness too… 🙏 With thanks to Cllr Rich for sharing on a couple of local message boards we entertained plenty of families cheering us on from the bridges over the Rivers Chelmer and Can. 👏 Thanks too to Matt for saving supper by negotiating 20 of us into the super-fine Rose of India restaurant on a busy Saturday night.
